Spring is definitely on its way and nature has started getting busy again here at The Roost.
As the birds starts singing again, they are also busy searching out suitable nesting sites, so we we’ve been busy cleaning & maintaining our many nesting boxes around the meadow.
Our site attracts a wide variety of wildlife so whilst birds use some of the nesting boxes, the local wasps tend to take up residence in the others!
Whilst wasps nests are incredible constructions and a marvel to behold, they make the boxes unusable for the birds so this year we’ve been putting up even more natural wasp deterrents. These are strange grey cloth bags that hang beside nesting boxes. Apparently, to other wasps, they look like large wasp nests so any new wasps searching for a home, scarper and look for somewhere else – this ways the birds get to use the boxes and we don’t have to kill any wasps so it’s a win-win.
It’s also lovely to report that, this week, the frogs have returned to the wildlife pond in large numbers – you can hear them calling long before you see them. They have been very busy with their “loving pursuits” because the pond is now packed with frog spawn – such a great site to see. Come summer, the meadow grasses will be hiding all the small cute baby frogs so be careful where you step!
What with the meadow’s lovely display of snow drops,. the primroses starting to bloom and the evenings beginning to grow longer we can finally welcome in the spring and look forward to a long, warm summer (fingers crossed)!
